The Lonely Island – Turtleneck and Chain (2011)

Posted: May 6, 2011 in Music

It’s no stretch to say that the funniest parts of Saturday Night Live the last few years have been the Digital Shorts. The trend started with the Chris Parnell and Andy Samberg rap, “Lazy Sunday” (one of my favorite songs ever.) Then Natalie Portman told us what she wants (“to drink and fight!”) and what she needs (“to fuck all night!”) in “Natalie’s Rap.” Justin Timberlake got involved next with “Dick in a Box” and started a new trend in gift-giving. The excellent “Jizz in My Pants” and “I’m on a Boat” (which was Grammy nominated) were other Shorts featured on the long-running show.

The popularity of these shorts led to Samberg actually putting these songs on an album with many other songs and skits. He called the act The Lonely Island, and in 2009 released Incredibad. The album debuted at #13 on Billboard’s Top 200 album charts, and has sold over a quarter of a million albums to date. Unable to tour because of the rigors of filming Saturday Night Live, it was unknown what the band had planned for the future – if anything. Those questions were answered with the announcement of the follow-up album Turtleneck & Chain.

Now a trio, The Lonely Island consists of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, who are all currently SNL writers. Turtleneck picks off where Incredibad left off. The album is loaded with guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Beck, Justin Timberlake, Akon, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj. Even the immortal John Waters makes an appearance in both the video and song for “The Creep,” which has already premiered on SNL.

While you might think that this, like most music parody albums, would be loaded with goofy, silly jokes layered over a cheesy rap beat, you couldn’t be more wrong. Samberg realizes the joke of it all, but has made a serious effort to legitimize the album and it’s content. It’s funny as hell, but the music is as strong as any other rap album out there these days. When the dick and fart jokes are taking a break, the bombastic beats drive this album over the top. In fact, I would imagine this album being one of the more popular albums of the summer with the rap crowd. Granted, some may take issue to your car stereo pumping out a jam about how small and soft your dick is, but what the hell – it’s just a joke, right?

Samberg has made it clear that he plans on continuing his current stint with SNL, as well as taking roles in movies (of which Hot Rod was one of my personal favorites,) but here at the Nutwork, we hope The Lonely Island continues to put out albums as funny and grandiose as Turtleneck & Chain. We all need a laugh every once in a while.

The CD/DVD will be released May 10, 2011 everywhere. The DVD portion contains several videos from the album, as well as a couple of Samberg’s SNL shorts that did not make the CD.
