Green Day – Awesome As F**k (2011)

Posted: March 17, 2011 in Music

One of the most successful tours of the last decade was Green Day’s road trek through 2009/2010 on their “21st Century Breakdown Tour. “ While I didn’t have the opportunity to see this show live myself, reviews rolled in from every stop around around the world about the grandeur and excellence of this band’s live performance. So it should really come as no surprise that Green Day will be offering up a new live CD/DVD package at the end of this month.

Titled Awesome As Fuck, the CD/DVD set features all the highlights from the band’s recent tour. In other words, these aren’t from one particular show. They span the group’s whole tour, everywhere from London to Glasgow, Japan to Germany, and, naturally, California, too. While I usually don’t like that type of setup (I prefer the “one-show” live CD that encapsulates an entire performance), these hand-picked tunes were obviously the best of the best of what the band performed on their way around the world.

Unlike 2005′s Bullet in a Bible (also a live album), the set draws heavily on rarities. In addition to popular singles then and now, Green Day threw in real oldies like “Pasalaqua” and “Holden Caulfield”, alongside “new” song, “Cigarettes and Valentines”. If you opt for the digital releases on iTunes, you’ll find some real rare live gems like “Letterbomb” (arguably the best song off of 2004′s American Idiot, just sayin’), “Paper Lanterns”, and old-school favorite, “Christie Road”.

On top of this great collection, they’re throwing in a DVD of their live set recorded in Tokyo. I don’t know what it is about Japan, but they seem to have the most energetic fans around the world – many live performances seem to be recorded there. Green Day has begun the infant stages of writing their next album – planned for a 2012/2013 release – so this live collection will have to hold you over until they follow up their 2009 effort. Hopefully it won’t be as long a gap as it was between American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. While the band has matured exponentially since their early days, they still maintain a raw punk energy that has kept them at the top of the radio-punk scene.

Awesome As Fuck will be available everywhere March 22nd via Reprise Records.
