Dethklok Comics: Issues #1-3 (2011)

Considering that Dethklok is the biggest and most important band in the universe, my question is why it’s taken so long for a Metalocalypse comic book series to get off the ground. Originally, it was just the Dethklok vs. The Goon one-shot from Dark Horse Comics. That came about because The Goon creator Eric Powell is a huge fan of the show.

From there, though, Dark Horse got with series co-creator Brendon Small and have developed a full publishing program around the Metalocalypse brand. The printed series began in October 2010, presenting new stories from our favorite group of metal madmen. They even got artists and writers from the show to collaborate with the Dark Horse team on whatever’s going to come down the pipe.

It’s not uncommon for television shows to go to comics while they’re still on the air, but I believe this is the first Adult Swim series to make the transition. Maybe it’ll launch a trend and we can get Venture Brothers next, or maybe a whole Adult Swim line. I wouldn’t mind digest-sized anthology collections of some of their more nonsensical entries. If the rest of their shows translate as well to print as Metalocalypse – I’m in.

The comics themselves are pretty cool. While the scratched out curse words pale in comparison to the guitar screech editing done in the cartoon – the rest of the read is pretty much what one would expect. Followers of the show will have no problem hearing the voices of the bandmates as they read along in their comic adventures. All comics have variant cover arts by Eric Powell and Jon Schnepp. While the first set of books were a 3 issue mini series (download below), Brendon Small and Jon Schnepp have stated that there will be more comics to come.
