Deadmau5 – 4×4=12 (2010)

Posted: February 21, 2011 in Music

Flying the flag for Electro, House and Progressive Trance, Canadian DJ/Producer Joel Zimmerman aka Deadmau5 returns with his third studio album 4×4 = 12. Fans of his previous work will be happy to know that with this numerically titled effort the Mau5 dosent stray far from what he knows. For those of you that aren’t familiar with Deadmau5, he’s the mouse-head wearing DJ that is quickly climbing the ranks as one of the best computer-aided DJ’s on the planet.

2010 showcased his style with appearances on The MTV Video Awards, CSI, and countless other television performances. His sound is similar in style to Daft Punk and Justice, but I find his style a bit more enigmatic and infectous – the type of electrobeats that get the toe tapping if not the whole rump shaking.

This album displays some rather lush sounds ranging from deep bass lines, distinctively rezzed bass lines and warm synth pads throughout. Most tracks progress reasonably well – with the expected repetition that stamps the groove into your head. This wouldn’t really be a factor if you were taking in the high energy output that radiates from the album on a dance floor somewhere as there really are some infectious beats here, but for home consumption the overly long track lengths do tend to rub a lot of the gloss of the overall experience. This album is better to move to than to just sit and listen, but the technique involved and the use of his MacBook make it interesting on a deeper level.

Overall its a pretty solid collection of beats with some tracks like Bad Selection (which open up the DJ’s sonic repetoire a little wider) having more weight behind them than others – but in a year which has been host to a whole collection of innovative beat makers Deadmau5’s 4×4=12 stands out as one of the best.
