The Devin Townsend Project – Addicted

Posted: January 27, 2011 in Music

For those of you who don’t know Devin Townsend, here’s a little history.

Canadian. Lead singer of the now defunct “Strapping Young Lad”. Solo artist. Puppeteer. Father. Sober — And the producer of almost every great metal album to come out over the last ten years.

Addicted is the second in a series of four albums (three and four expected later in 2011) that are all over the musical spectrum. The first album, Ki, was a quiet album – bordering on ambient. Addicted is anything but.

Put better by Devin himself: “I wanted to make a record that was heavy, without being dark or depressing. When I got into metal it was for the energy behind it, but somewhere along the way that energy started getting really negative. In music right now, there’s a ton of heavy bands that are really depressing to listen to loudly. I wanted to make a record without any real deep metaphor on the surface. Something that sounds good, has a good beat, and a positive feeling. It is still heavy as-all-get-out, but I think there’s a differentiation to be made between being ‘peaceful’, and being peaceful but wanting to celebrate loud, crushing music.”

I strongly suggest giving this one a try. It’s powerful rock, with the catchiest sing-alongs this side of Bon Jovi. Great female vocals add to an absolutely fantastic, 5-star album.

And when people ask you where you heard of him, let ’em know we’re here…
